Wednesday Excursions

(A) Historic Town of Ouro Preto

Founded in the early 18th century 513 km north of Rio de Janeiro, the Historic Town of Ouro Preto (Black Gold) covers the steep slopes of the Vila Rica (Rich Valley), centercentre of a rich gold mining area and the capital of Minas Gerais Province from 1720-1897.  Along the original winding road and within the irregular layout following the contours of the landscape lie squares, public buildings, residences, fountains, bridges and churches which together form an outstanding homogenous group exhibiting the fine curvilinear form of Baroque architecture. The Historic City of Ouro Preto was the symbolic center of the Inconfidência Mineira in 1789, a Brazilian independence movement, and home to exceptional artists responsible for many of the most significant works of the Brazilian Baroque period, including the Church of São Francisco of Assisi by the distinguished architect and sculptor Antônio Francisco Lisboa (Aleijadinho).

(B) Inhotim

Instituto Inhotim is one of the largest open-air museums of contemporary art in the world and a botanical garden located in Brumadinho, Minas Gerais. The garden was designed by the famous Brazilian landscape artist, the late Roberto Burle-Max. The curator of the contemporary art collection is Tunga, a well-known Brazilian artist.

Its privileged location – amid the rich biomes of the Atlantic Forest and the tropical savanna of Cerrado –, as well as the lush landscapes over 140 hectares open for visiting, offer a unique experience to visitors, blending art and nature. Around 700 works by more than 60 artists coming from nearly 40 different countries are displayed outdoors and in galleries that share the space with a Botanical Garden of more than four4.3 thousand rare botanic species, from all continents.

(C) City tour of Belo Horizonte

Visit some of the city's main points of interest, including the Circuito Cultural da Liberdade, where several museums and cultural spaces are located, Praça do Papa, Palácio das Artes and the Municipal Market.

Circuito Cultural da Liberdade

The history of Circuito Liberdade is intertwined with the history of the city of Belo Horizonte itself. The transformation of Praça da Liberdade into a cultural complex was carried out in 2010, but its vocation for activities focused on art, culture and heritage preservation was built much earlier, with the Mineiro Public Archive, the Public Library, the Mineiro Museum and the occupation of the Square by various cultural movements.
